The new girl in town

Hello New Paltzians!

I'm Maria (Davila), and the newest Gadfly. I'm pretty amped about it. In January 2010, I celebrated my three year anniversary of living in New Paltz. However, I celebrated by moving to Gardiner. I find myself overly involved in the politics of New Paltz, and involved just the right amount in random community goings-on. I'm a Senior at SUNY New Paltz, Majoring in Political Science (concentrating in Political Theory) and Minoring in Environmental Studies. You'll see a lot of the philosophical influence in my posts. Once I graduate in May, I'm going to stay in Gardiner, and work in my field.

I consider myself centrist. This means that when it comes to local issues, I'm likely to examine all sides (the left AND the right), and play devil's advocate. Chances are, that means every reader will love me AND hate me at different points in our strange internet relationship. It's a roller coaster, baby!

I'm looking forward to engaging in my civic duty here at Gadfly. See you all in the blogosphere!

I never expected anyone to read anyway, so no worries by me!

Now that you are a Gardiner resident why don't you start a Gardiner Gadfly. We here in NP don't need outsiders commenting on our community (unless you are commenting on the school district which we share).

How charming, a cowardly anonymous poster to welcome Maria!

Since you asked, I did consider Maria's residency. Maria's address was in New Paltz for quite some time, her focus and life are centered on New Paltz, and like any Gadfly she has agreed only to post about topics that are relevant to New Paltz.

More important to me than where Maria sleeps is the fact that she is able to discuss issues without lowering herself to immature or petty attacks on the people who champion them. Maria is far too classy to dismiss someone's opinion because they are an "outsider" or because she harbors some secret grudge against the person.

So Anonymous, feel free to visit Brittany's blog, since she apparently won't be coming back to agree with you here. You can find it at legislativebarbie.blogspot.com.

Doesn't Brittany reside in California somewhere? She has even less of a stake!!!

Fine, one more answer for you: Brittany moved back here in December. Please check your facts (and sign your name) before posting.

Well, there goes the neighborhood.

While I rest my head in Gardiner, fear not, readers!!! My political heart pumps in New Paltz! It's just much cheaper for me to live in Gardiner...so I unfortunately am forced to cheat on the community I love by hanging out with New Paltz all day and sleeping in Gardiner at night! YIKES!

The issues of New Paltz are important to me, and I feel that it is imperative for all voters/taxpayers/residents/students/vagrants/interested parties to know all sides of everything that is going on in the community around them. Besides, much like the school district (and me), there are many things that Gardiner and New Paltz share!

Welcome to Gadfly Maria, I am so glad you are here!

OK - deep breath - at the suggestion of Terence, I am going to try to overcome my perpetual aggravation at the seemingly endless stream of alleged gadflies and entertain a new approach.

Welcome, Maria!

I'm interested in hearing, in your own words, what your top 3 (or more, if you'd like) biggest issues/concerns/passions are in the Village of New Paltz and your unique perspective on ways to approach those issues/concerns/passions.

In addition, I appreciate your readiness in pointing out that you do not, in fact, reside in New Paltz. Given your past history with the community, could you please explain what it is that has caused you to feel so strongly about NP?

Thanks much.

Hey Brittany! I'm going to give that some thought and write a post answering your questions some time this week!
